Palmetto Fellows Scholarship
Overview:
The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship is a merit based program established in 1988 to recognize the most academically talented high school seniors and encourage theses students to attend in state colleges and universities. Award Amount: Palmetto Fellows may receive up to $6,700 their freshman year and up to $7,500 for their sophomore, junior, and senior years. Additional Information: Award is renewable. Eligibility:
There are two ways in which a student can meet the eligibility for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship. Student must meet all three criteria:

Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancements:
During the 2007 legislative session, the General Assembly created the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement increasing the award from $7,500 to $10,000. The enhancement is available to students majoring in mathematics, science and health fields at eligible South Carolina four year institutions. Students who meet the eligibility requirements for both the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and the Enhancement will receive an annual award of up to $10,000 to cover the cost of tuition at an eligible four year public or independent institution location in South Carolina. To be eligible for the Scholarship Enhancement students must: 1) be a recipient of the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship; 2) earn at least 14 credit hours of instruction in approved mathematics or life and physical sciences or a combination of both by the end of the first academic year of college enrollment; and 3) declare an approved major in science, mathematics, or a health related field at the institutions. Life Scholarship
Overview:
The South Carolina General Assembly established the Legislative Incentives for Future Excellence (LIFE) Program in 1988 to increase access to higher education, improve employ-ability of South Carolina's students, provide incentives for students to better prepare for college, and to encourage students to graduate from college on time. Award Amount: LIFE scholars can earn up to $5,000 (including book allowance) each academic year toward the cost of attendance at an eligible four year institution in South Carolina. Life scholars can earn up to the cost of tuition including a $300 book allowance each academic year at an eligible two year public or technical institution in South Carolina. Students enrolling in approved 2 year independent institutions in South Carolina or a two year USC regional campus may receive up to the maximum average of the tuition cost. |

Life Scholarship Enhancements:

The Enhancement is available to students majoring in mathematics, science, and health fields at eligible SC four year institutions. Students who meet the eligibility requirements for both the LIFE Scholarship and the Enhancement will receive an annual award of up to $7,500 to cover the cost of tuition. Eligible students can be awarded a LIFE Scholarship Enhancement to meet their cost of attendance for up to six consecutive terms starting the second year of college enrollment. To be eligible for the Scholarship Enhancement a student must: 1) be a recipient of the LIFE Scholarship; 2) earn at least 14 credit hours of instruction in approved mathematics or life and physical sciences or a combination of both by the end of the first academic year of college enrollment; 3) declare an approved major in science, mathematics, or health related field at the institution. HOPE Scholarship |
Overview:
The South Carolina HOPE Scholarship Program was established in 2001 and was implemented during the 2002-2003 academic year. It is a merit based award designed for first time entering freshmen attending four year institutions who do not meet the qualifications for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship or the LIFE Scholarship. Award Amount: Eligible full time students entering eligible four year institutions in South Carolina may receive up to $2,800 at an eligible four year institution in South Carolina. At the end of the SC HOPE recipient's first year at an eligible institution, if the student has earned a 3.0 GPA and earned a minimum of 30 credit hours, the student will be eligible to receive the LIFE Scholarship for their second year of attendance. |

South Carolina Need-based Grants
Overview:
The General Assembly established the SC Need-based Grant Program in 1996 to provide additional financial assistance to South Carolina's neediest students attending eligible SC public institutions. Award Amount: Eligible full time students may receive up to $2,500 per year if enrolled full time or up to $1,250 per year if enrolled part time. Additional Information: Foster care youth may receive the maximum award in addition to Need-based Grant funds specifically for foster care youth. |
